Industry 4.0 and SAP Cloud: the importance of PaaS world

Written by

We have already said that the expression Industry 4.0 has a more complex meaning than expected. It’s not just a buzzphrase, a slogan without a real meaning. It’s a real revolution starting from the merging of three different trends:

  • Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Automation and robotics
  • Big Data and analytics

Behind them, there is a fourth strong point, maybe less showy but surely essential.

It already happened: during the first industrial revolution the emphasis was on mechanization and mechanical loom, but underneath there was the indispensable steam engine.

Also behind Industry 4.0 there is an energy that gives companies the means to innovate. It is represented by Cloud models and platforms as-a-Service: while Infrastructure as-a-Service supports workloads generated by Industry 4.0, Platforms as-a-Service and their integrated elements are the real potential of the fourth industrial revolution.

Thanks to PaaS, enterprises can quickly integrate technological components with each other. In this way, IT management costs are reduced or eliminated, in favor of a fail fast approach that tests new roads and rapidly changes routes if they don’t bring the expected results. Just to go against who said – not too long ago – that PaaS was dead.

Because PaaS is not dead at all, and actually it became stronger thanks to more open platforms. It is the case of SAP in Cloud Foundry, an open source PaaS with the contribution of Google, IBM, Pivotal, Red Hat and Microsoft. Cooperation agreements for the creation of standardized integration models follow the same logic.

In this scenario, SAP Cloud Platform plays a key role in two directions:

  • It offers a complete set of technical features and business services to develop new generation Cloud applications
  • It opens SAP data also to extraneous individuals, extending corporate business systems and enlarging the company itself

Integration is the key of the fourth industrial revolution: thanks to it, companies will be able to develop new applications and services to compete in Digital Economy.

Do we really know Industry 4.0?

By now, the expression Industry 4.0 is used by almost every person who is interested in the application of new technologies in production environments. As many commonly used expression, it is often used without really understanding its meaning. Knowing this meaning is useful not only to be clearer, but also to better understand how this evolution will transform manufacturing industry.

Industry 4.0 identifies a European initiative about the evolution of manufacturing sector, a specific project by German Government. This term refers to an industrial revolution that follows the mechanization of production of XVIII century, the introduction of electric energy at the end of XIX century, and the adoption of digital technologies for production control in the second half of XX century.

The fourth industrial revolution sees the introduction of cyber-physical system (CPS) and IoT environments within the factories, aiming at the notion of smart factory. In a smart factory, new technologies are transversal, production is smart and there is a close synergy between worker, machines and tools. Thanks to evolved services and infrastructures, production is open towards suppliers and customers, but also services and infrastructures external to the company (transports, logistics, waste management…). A greater attention to energy consumption is also a transversal element, because more performing production systems reduce wastes.

Industry 4.0 is not a more “connected” Industry 3.0. Industry 4.0 key is represented by CPSs, smart systems connected with company IT systems, but also able to interact and collaborate with other CPSs. This allows to go beyond the simple processes automation driven by man and to aim at decentralized production systems able to take autonomous decisions in real time.

Espedia and SAP have been working from ten years in connected manufacturing field and today proposes itself as a reference partner for manufacturing companies interested in Industry 4.0.

Industry 4.0: tax benefits facilitate investments in real innovation

Written by
Pierpaolo Russo

People often take for granted that new technologies belonging to Industry 4.0 are only for big business because of the required investments. Actually, they bring benefits to companies of any size: for this, the Government plan on Industry 4.0 aims at supporting the evolution of Italian manufacturing thanks to the introduction of super-amortization. Therefore, thanks to new regulations, it is easier to invest in innovation.

Legge di Bilancio from 2017 provides for a 140% super-amortization on the purchase of machines and a 250% iper-amortization on technological assets connected to Industry 4.0. Any company can benefit it, without even having to complete the purchase by 2017, as long as the order has been accepted by the end of 2017 and a fifth of the total price has been paid.

Industry 4.0 is not only machines, but also intangible assets (software, systems and system integration) connected to digitalized business processes. The software doesn’t have to be connected to a new machine: if the software makes it work, it is considered as an integral part of the machine itself and so it has a 250% incentive.

The software covered by incentives are several, just as the possible applications of Industry 4.0 model. Among the others, there are:

  • Modeling and 3D simulation platforms,
  • Industrial control systems
  • IoT industrial environments
  • Platforms that manage production and supply chain (also via Cloud)
  • Analytics and machine learning applications
  • IT safety solutions
  • Robotics
  • Wearable field and many others.

This new law is very interesting because it can give a boost to innovation. But to seize this opportunity, a partner is needed, to help companies define an evolutionary business path and select the most appropriate solutions according to regulations. Thanks to its experience in manufacturing field, Espedia can play this role.

Espedia Innovation Tour continues: the highlights of the successful Italian cases of Industry 4.0

Written by
Pierpaolo Russo

Once filed with satisfaction the Italian stages in Franciacorta and Modena, Espedia Innovation Tour 2017 gets ready for June and November dates. We will be in touch again with territory and clients, who are ready to tell us their innovation paths and especially the declinations of Industry 4.0 model.

Espedia started its 2017 by bringing attention again on the solutions and technologies available for those companies that want to innovate their production and business processes. The Innovation Tour format, a winning one, doesn’t change: no typical marketing presentations, but real stories from companies that already implemented new solutions in Industry 4.0 field.

IoT and Digital Transformation will be in the foreground with projects on:

  • SAP Manufacturing Execution (ME)
  • Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence (MII)
  • Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)
  • Portfolio and Project Management (PPM)

More than on application platforms, the Tour focuses on customer testimonials to give participants the possibility to compare directly with companies – both during presentations and during informal networking moments – on problems and how to deal with them. Sharing experiences is a concrete help, especially for those companies that know that Industry 4.0 can help solve very complex productive processes, reorganize business flows, improve productivity and analyze production data in real time, but don’t know how to take the first steps towards Digital Transformation.

Espedia role is to assist companies through this path: thanks to it competences it can support and redefine business processes in any market sector. Starting from the classic product lifecycle management (PPM/PLM), and passing through document management system (DMS) to get to the shopfloor with smart manufacturing implementation (ME/MII) in the field of an Industry 4.0 strategy.
